A man thought to be around 27 years old was discovered dead in the Kamuteini area of Kiambu county, in what police suspect was an electrocution during an attempt to steal electrical cable. Officers found the body lying face down beside a power pole, according to The Star, Kenya.
Preliminary police observations suggest the man may have been electrocuted before falling from the pole. The Star, Kenya reports that a sack and a nylon rope were attached to the electrical installation, while a spanner and a hacksaw were found next to the body.
The man was carrying no identification documents, which police say has made it difficult to establish who he was.
Why it matters
The death points to a persistent problem for Kenya's electricity infrastructure: the theft and vandalism of cables and transformers, which The Star, Kenya notes has been rising in some parts of the country even as authorities work to curb it. Incidents of this kind carry consequences beyond the loss of equipment — they can interrupt power supply to homes and businesses, and they put the people who tamper with live installations at serious risk.
This case also illustrates a practical difficulty that often follows such deaths: without identity papers, confirming who the victim is becomes a slow process involving mortuary records and public appeals.
Scene processed before body was moved
Crime scene investigators examined the site before the body was taken to the Kiambu Level V Hospital mortuary. It is being held there pending identification and a postmortem examination, The Star, Kenya reports.
Police expect further investigations to clarify the circumstances of the incident, including how the man came into contact with the electrical installation. No details have been released on whether anyone else is suspected of involvement, and police have not named the man.
Other deaths reported in the same police round-up
The Kiambu case was reported alongside two other deaths in different parts of the country.
In Mombasa county, a 28-year-old man drowned while fishing at Jazi Marine Beach in the Manyani area of Kisauni Sub-County. The deceased was identified as Amani Gift. According to The Star, Kenya, he left home on October 29 to fish and was overcome by strong currents.
The matter was reported to officers at Junda Police Post, who went to the scene together with members of the public. The body was recovered from the water, the scene was photographed and processed, and the remains were then taken to the Coast General and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation ahead of a postmortem. Police have recorded the case as a drowning while they continue looking into how it happened.
In Vihiga county, a 49-year-old woman died while receiving treatment after she was found unconscious near the Majengo Petro Station in Central Maragoli. She was identified as Margaret Zindoli.
A police report cited by The Star, Kenya states that she was found on October 28 with vomit around her mouth. Members of the public raised the alarm and responding officers took her to Vihiga County Referral Hospital. Initial observations raised the suspicion of an alcohol-related incident, though the report says the circumstances of her condition were not clear.
On Thursday morning, police were informed by the woman's daughter that her mother had died during treatment. The daughter also told officers that her mother had been unwell and was on medication. Police visited the hospital and confirmed her identity as the woman admitted the previous evening. Her body was moved to the Vihiga Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being kept pending a postmortem to determine the cause of death.
What to watch
Police are yet to release the identity of the Kiambu man, and the postmortem results in all three cases are still outstanding. Investigators' findings on how the cable theft attempt unfolded — and whether the rising vandalism trend draws a policy response — will be the next developments to follow.
